Diversity and Inclusion
As an international student/scholar and a person of color, I value the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion through my lived experiences in academia. I also consider myself incredibly fortunate to have been mentored by immigrants through my academic journey thus far, from which I've gained valuable experience in promoting a diverse and inclusive research setting.Â
In my future independent career in academia, I will uphold the following principles to promote diversity and inclusion:
Recruiting students, postdocs, and faculty from diverse backgrounds, including women, black, indigenous, people of color (BIPOC), and immigrants.
Promoting the use of gender-inclusive language within the research group, department and institution meetings, and at conferences.
Understanding and mitigating citation bias.
Time dedicated to discussing diversity, equity, and inclusion issues as part of research group meetings.
